The 2012 Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League (RASCL) City Cup Tournament was held at Century High School on Saturday March 17. Century came into the meet as the second seed from its second place regular season finish (3-2-1 record).
Century was the home team and played Lourdes High School in the semi-final round. Century advanced to the championship with a 3 ½ - 1 ½ win. Mayo/Stewartville, the 2012 regular season champions took advantage of their higher seed to advance after a 2 ½ - 2 ½ draw against John Marshall High School.
However, Century refused to relinquish the Cup to Mayo/Stewartville and prevailed 3-2 in the championship round. Century varsity members included juniors Michael Ekker (co-captain), Enoch Tan, Gregory Nathan, sophomore Rory Li and Kellogg sixth grader Richard Huang.
The 2012 RASCL “All League” Team was announced at the awards ceremony. Michael Ekker was Century’s representative. Sophomore Rory Li was also awarded the fourth place individual trophy for the regular season schedule.
Players and teams now turn their focus to the 2012 Minnesota Chess Association State Tournament which will be held March 31-April 1 at the Crowne Plaza in St. Paul.
