Support Positive Messages at Century - Volunteers Needed!

A group of Century teachers and staff are working to put positive messages for students around the school on the walls, in the bathrooms, and in the hallways. They want to create a team of parents, teachers, and parents who could work together to make this happen. If you are interested in helping out, please fill out the form below by Friday September 28th.
Here is the link to the form: https://goo.gl/forms/b5abteFCSmJShp0e2

Once they have collected volunteers' information, they will arrange for a meeting time to be held after Homecoming in October to develop a plan and move forward with the project.

PSAT October 10

Juniors in Physics class all received a sign up sheet for the PSAT, given at Century on October 10. They also had the opportunity to take a PSAT information and practice booklet. The sign up sheet is also available on our website: Link to PSAT Page on Century Website

Sign up sheets are due with the $10 test registration fee in the Main Office by October 4. Fee waivers are available to Juniors only from Mr. Couillard in the C/D office.

While most of our students will focus on taking the ACT for college admission, some students may do better with the SAT format and will want practice with it to see if the SAT test format clicks with them. The PSAT is also used as a screener by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for awarding National Merit Scholarships to a fraction of the top 1% of test takers, and students who do especially well on standardized tests should also be encouraged to give the PSAT a shot for this reason. Also, since the latest revision to the PSAT and SAT, it is more like the ACT than ever and can serve as a good practice for standardized testing in general. Juniors are encouraged to take the PSAT for the above reasons; Sophomores may consider it but could also consider just looking over a practice test, as only juniors are eligible for National Merit Scholarship consideration.

New Entrance Procedures for Safety and Security - A Message from Principal Fogarty

Dear Century Families,

Welcome to the new school year. We are excited that you are here! Rochester Public Schools continues to review our school safety and security measures. In fact, you may recall a survey that was offered to our families last spring. Overwhelmingly, you shared you’d like to see your school explore more secure entrances. As a follow up to this survey, I want to inform you that all of our schools use a single point of entrance. At the high school level, our juniors and seniors have the privilege of an open campus. We determined that due to the rotation of students and visitors, we would find an alternate solution to a buzzer while still providing an additional level of safety during the school day.

Therefore, we are implementing a new procedure this school year. All students and visitors must enter through Door Number One. All of our doors will be locked during the school day. We have hired Mr. William Skaden as our Security and Safety Officer at Century High School. This is a Rochester Public School employee and not a police liaison officer, although, we will still have our police liaison officer in our building, too. This person’s role will be to welcome visitors and build relationships with our students. Our new staff member will be in our building every school day from 6:30 AM until 3:00 PM.

We ask for your partnership in this new process. Students should not arrive to school before 6:45 AM as the doors will be locked and students will not have a way to enter the building. This is especially important during our cooler months because do not want students standing in the cold weather.

I welcome you to meet our new security and safety officer, Mr. Skaden, when you visit us next.

Thank you for your continued support,
Chris Fogarty
Principal
Century High School

College Testing

ACT or SAT? Should I take both? Many students and families find college testing requirements in the United States to sometimes be stressful, confusing, or both. Unlike some countries where there is a single test and sometimes uniform university admission requirements, in the US both students and post secondary institutions have choices related to testing.

In general, four year colleges and universities will require students to submit official ACT or SAT test scores in order to be considered for admission, and the two tests are used interchangeably by nearly all institutions. There is generally no reason for students to take both tests, unless they really like taking tests. Some colleges have in the last few years gone to a test optional policy so applicants are evaluated primarily on the basis of their high school coursework and grades. For students with a combination of higher GPA's and lower than average test scores it can be a good idea to consider applying test optional where this is an option, but this is usually a decision made after taking the ACT or SAT and evaluating the score alongside the grades. Most two year institutions (like RCTC) will not require a test score for admission but may still use submitted scores for course placement purposes. Therefore, in most cases my advice to students is to take an ACT or SAT, and the good news is we do offer a free ACT with writing to all juniors, this year on April 2nd, just after spring break.

Since we offer the ACT to students at no charge, for most it will make sense to focus any standardized test practice on the ACT. However, some students may do better with the SAT format and will want practice with it and an opportunity to see if the SAT test format clicks with them. For these students we offer the PSAT as a practice version of the SAT on October 10 this year, and there is a fee of $10 to take this test. I will have sign up information available here and on our website next week.

For timing, most of our juniors will want to consider test dates in the winter and spring, while seniors looking to retake should do so in the fall. This year, the SAT will be offered on national test dates at Century on October 6, November 3, December 1, March 9, and May 4. The ACT will be offered on national test dates on September 8, October 27, December 8, February 9, and April 13; as well as on the district test date of April 2 for all our 11th grade students.

Registration information for national test dates (registration is automatic for the district test date) for ACT can be found at https://www.act.org/

Registration information for national test dates for SAT can be found at https://www.collegeboard.org/

In addition to the regular SAT, the College Board also offers SAT Subject Tests on many of their national test dates that are required or recommended as part of your college application by a small number of institutions. This is very uncommon, but it is always a good idea to double check your college application to ensure you submit all the required information, including all test scores and transcripts.
